Crochet for Summer

Many crocheters set down their hooks and yarn during the summer, but itís really a great time to crochet. There are lots of great projects and lightweight yarns that are suitable for summer crocheting.

The biggest complaint is that thereís no time to crochet with all the other activities going on. Itís easy to find time to sneak in a few rows here and there. Instead of taking a book to the beach, why not take along your crochet. How about those evening spent rocking on the front porch or around the camp fire?

Choose projects that are small and/or use lightweight fibers. Theyíre more portable and easier to carry around than heavier crochet projects. A lace cotton thread throw weighs much less than an acrylic worsted weight afghan.

Light crochet scarves and shawlettes are fantastic summer accessories and can supply a little bit extra warmth for the early and late summer evenings when it can get a little chilly when the sun goes down. They can also compliment your attire by providing some extra color and texture. Itís not too difficult to adapt patterns for use with lightweight yarns. Donít be afraid to experiment and practice with lace weight yarns and any colors you like.

Small projects are great fun to crochet during the summer because they are quick and simple. For example, you can make crochet flowers and bows to embellish just about anything you want. Other small crochet projects include bookmarks, cell phone covers, washcloths, etc. Cotton makes great kitchen and dining items. Place mats, napkin rings, coasters, cup cozies and such are quick to make and show off your style.

Summer is also a great time to get a head start on holiday crochet. Start with the small and easy stuff and youíll have time at the end of summer for the bigger projects.

Donít give up your crochet just because itís summer time; enjoy it. If you have questions feel free to send an email or post them in the forum using the links provided in the right hand column.
