The Tarot Book Club for September 2008

Tarot Book Club

Welcome to the BellaOnline Tarot Book Club!

Our Tarot Book Club is now officially launched!

September seems like the perfect time to begin a book club. The energy at the tail end of "summer" lends itself to cozy curling up with a good book. In our case, it means a good book and a good deck - of tarot cards, to apply the principles discussed in the tarot books selected.

Each month, a new book will be featured, augmented with a forum discussion where you can share your questions, opinions, and insights about the Month's Selection. If you wish to participate in the discussion, click on one of the links below to order a copy of the book online, from either Llewellyn (the official publisher of our first book selection) or Amazon.com.

My Review of Our Selection

This is a very powerful book and is NOT for the faint of heart - I recommend this for tarot readers who are in the advanced stages of tarot interpretation and who have a bent for deeper esoteric exploration. It couples tarot interpretation with a deep understanding of the Qabalistic, Hermetic, Astrological, Elemental, and Magical properties of each card. For those who are interested in the use of talismans, amulets, magic, and angel invocation, this book has a lot to offer. This book is also written by the authors and designers of the Golden Dawn Magical Tarot, so for best results, the authors recommend using their deck as well.

The general premise of this book is that each and every one of the 76 tarot cards can be perceived and used as a talisman or amulet. Logically, the book begins with an introduction to the topic of talismans and amulets, as well as an overview of what magic is exactly, and how it works. As the book progresses, the reader is introduced to the "Tarot Angels", powerful protective Beings that respond to invocation and communion.

The book is both theoretical and practical. Specific rituals are provided, including banishing, invocation of One's Guardian Angel, ceremonial magic, healing, abundance, protection and so on are provided, coupled with concrete spreads that you can follow. Beautiful drawings of various angels and elementals pepper the book, adding to its beauty.

The physical book itself is easy to use, the size is about letter paper size, so it opens easily without restriction at the spine. The layout of the text and illustrations adds to its readability, as do the choice of font and the writing style of the authors. The cover illustration is the beautiful blue art work as seen in the thumbnails above - this book makes a nice coffee table or book shelf display piece as well for the avid tarot enthusiast.

Another unique feature of this book, is the various talismanic properties it offers of the Tarot cards, according to five different tarot decks.

For instance, the Five of Wands card can be used as a Talisman differently, depending on the deck used.

Golden Dawn Deck: To purify, or banish strife and quarreling.
Thoth Tarot Deck: To invoke volcanic energy, to banish strife,
Universal Deck: to be competitive; to be successful in the competition for a job, contract, or sporting event; to succeed in a friendly competition,
Babylonian Deck: To struggle against one's base animal nature; to battle against destructive instincts or habits; to fight against evil and malice,
Marseille Deck: All of the above.
