Like many fulltimers and weekend campers, when we attend rallies or just simple get-togethers at a campground, we enjoy joining in on the “potlucks” that RVer’s are famous for. Many times the hosts of RV rallies plan a potluck in advance so the rally attendees come prepared for the event. The Wagon or Rally Masters, or perhaps the campground or RV resort will provide the main dish, usually a meat entre’ of some sort, like brats or burgers. One local Chapter of the FMCA, The Cenois Prairielanders, in Central Illinois, to which my husband and I belong, enjoys having themed potlucks for their weekend rallies; usually on the second night of the gathering. The ladies go overboard to try to outdo one another in a fun and friendly way by creating original and delicious side dishes for the group within the theme of the rally. One potluck was a Mexican Fiesta that featured tacos provided by the Wagon master’s committee and the range of side dishes brought by the attendees were incredible. We had wonderful chili, homemade tamales, taco pizza, Mexican wedding cookies and a multitude of really excellent dishes. The décor reflected a Mexican theme, with colorful table clothes, napkins and hanging paper lanterns. Someone lent chili pepper lights and the background music featured lively Mexican favorites. The kids and adults had fun swinging at the goodie filled piñata. This rally had been pre-planned as a “Grandkids Rally”, where the members invited kids, grandkids or other family members to join them at the rally and the potluck was the highlight of the weekend.

The possibilities for potluck ideas are endless, and we have enjoyed themes such as French, Italian, German, a Hawaiian Luau and even an old fashioned American Hometown celebration featuring hotdogs, potato salad, apple pie and watermelon. We have also had simple, less preparation intensive meals such as a Hobo stew where everyone attending the potluck brings a can of veggies to add to a stew pot along with their covered dish contribution. Even a simple soup with homemade bread was a wonderful potluck idea. With a little imagination and creativity potlucks can be entertaining and even educational, where the participants can learn a few little customs of the featured countries while searching for a unique dish to bring. For example, one member attending the Hawaiian Luau created nametags for everyone with the Hawaiian version of the person’s name.

Here are a couple of suggestions to get your ideas flowing…

*Christmas in July is a favorite theme at many campgrounds. Consider bringing your favorite Christmas cookie or dessert; a family recipe for cranberry relish or even green bean casserole, a favorite of everyone. Elephant item gift exchanges are a fun way to add to the festive feeling.

*An Italian Feast can be a fun way to enjoy all your favorite Italian dishes such as lasagna, brushetta, pizza, tiramisu and canolli.

*How about a Chocolate Fest for your desert creations? Have a “lite” dinner entrée, perhaps salad and a variety of dressings. This way guilt will be at a minimum! Everyone has a favorite chocolate specialty. Provide coffee and teas, and of course plenty of ice cold milk!
