Help Slow Down Aging with Exercise

Help Slow Down Aging with Exercise
Studies show you can feel much better and look much younger by combining a healthy diet with exercise. So, just taking a walk around the block may lead you to the “Fountain of Youth.”

The fact is regular exercise begins at the cellular level to slow your aging process. Here are four ways that exercise has been shown to slow down aging and can actually even reverse it.

1. Exercise Slows Down Cellular Aging. In a recent study, published in Lancet Oncology, Dr. Dean Ornish, founder of the Preventive Medicine Research Institute, showed that regular exercise can lengthen something called a telomere. What’s a telomere? It’s the protective cap around each chromosome that controls how fast body cells age. According to scientists, longer telomeres slow down aging to promote a longer, healthier life.

2. It Can Build New Brain Cells. The human brain shrinks with age, but exercise prevents and slows down this normal process associated with aging. Exercise also promotes neurogenesis - the formation of new brain cells. One study, for example, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, demonstrated that individuals who exercised regularly for at least a year increased the size of their memory center, effectively turning back the clock of their brain by several years.

3. Physical Activity Increases agility. People also get a lot stiffer and less flexible with age, usually as a result of being less physically active. A simple exercise program can change that. A recent British study, published in the The Journal of Physiology, revealed that people between the ages of 55 and 79 who cycled on a regular basis did just as well as much younger people on aging tests. They also had the metabolic health, balance and reflexes of much younger adults.

4. Regular Exercise Creates Healthy Skin. A McMasters University team tested the skin of adults over the age of 40 and found that those subjects who exercised regularly had skin comparable to younger adults in the 20 to 30 age range. They even discovered that those study participants over the age of 65 who walked, jogged or cycled for a period of at least three months exhibited similar skin of subjects 20 to 40 years old.

Exercise can turn your life around, making you look and feel younger. And it doesn’t require that much time and effort to get into action. Start with just ten minutes a day and work your way up to thirty minutes of moderate physical activity and you’ll be looking and feeling better in no time.
