DyslexiaDyslexia has been a recognized learning disability for many years, and yet children continue to struggle with traditional teaching strategies and lack of recognition of their true abilities. Children with developmental disabilities can be challenged by learning disabilities that go unrecognized when they are attributed to their original diagnosis. Every child deserves to be known well enough so that we can give them the support and encouragement they need to succeed at what they are most driven to accomplish. Many individuals with dyslexia or other learning disabilities have talents, abilities and absolute giftedness in other areas that they may not have a chance to discover or develop if we make dyslexia or other challenges brick walls in their paths rather than helpfing them build bridges to success in other areas. Remember that dyslexia is a small part of a child's complicated interaction with education and the world. We do need to offer a variety of methods and supports so that all children have a chance to be successful, but there are many other ways to learn and express ourselves that do not depend on the written word. I believe one way of helping children with learning disabilities is to give them frequent vacations from struggling with the task that is most difficult for them. Books on tape, visual presentations, editors and proof-readers are mainstream aids that may bring children with dyslexia back into the mainstream. They should not have to wait until adulthood to discover how much they have to give to the world.
