There are a lot of special words and abbreviations used in Online Auctions. This short guide will take you through the ones most commonly used so that you will know at a glance what is going on and help you to keep abreast of Auction Lingo.
Abbreviations
HTF - Hard to find. The item does not come up for auction very often and may well be worth a look.
LE - Limited Edition. The item was not mass produced.
MIB - Mint in Box. The item is in excellent condition complete with the original box.
NB - No Box. The item is not being offered with the original box. The original box can be very important to some collectors.
NBU - Never Been Used. The item is like new although it could be second hand.
NBW - Never Been Worn. The item has not been worn even though it could be second hand.
NM - Near Mint. Ambiguous term which eBay and other online auction sites may frown upon as it is impossible to quantify “near”. The seller usually means that the item is in very good condition but not perfect.
NP - Not Packaged. This usually relates to items that would normally be purchased blister packed or cellophane wrapped.
NWT - New With tags. This states that the item is new and still has the original tags or labels intact.
OB - Original Box. This can greatly increase the value the item. Pictures of the box should also be included in the listing.
SIG – Signed. Most signatures are not verifiable so unless the item is accompanied with a certificate of authenticity it is not acceptable to use this term.
Basic Abbreviations
P – Poor – Buyers should take note that the item is probably broken, damaged or is showing extreme signs of wear.
F - Fair – If the buyer is not too concerned with perfection he may pick up a good bargain here but beware that the item may be well worn or moderately damaged.
G – Good – The item may have wear or damage that affects the price but does not affect the use or look of the item.
VG - Very Good – Expect a good quality lot with minimal wear or damage.
Mint - As New, no marks or wear – Top condition. The item should be perfect.
As is – When an item is offered this way it means that the seller is not offering any guarantees and usually signifies that the seller will not accept returns.
